3 Ways to Be a Faster Songwriter
As the creator of Speed Songwriting, my primary purpose has been to help songwriters become better songwriters faster.
The Speed Songwriting mission is to write songs faster because speed is the primary bottleneck to progress.
Songs are our feedback. Without finished songs, we can’t get accurate feedback on our skills.
To be a faster songwriter, try this:
#1 — Write First Drafts Fast
It truly doesn’t take long to sketch the first draft of a song and edit it into a better final form.
The number of songs you write is directly proportional to your progress as a songwriter.
Takeaway: Finish first drafts instead of finished masterpieces.
#2 — Perfectionism Doesn’t Lead To Better Songs
Pursue your songwriting with all your heart and trust that your effort will pay off.
When your inner critic gets in the way, follow this rule:
- Quantity leads to quality
“The most important possible thing you can do is do a lot of work.” -Ira Glass
There is no “right way” to become a better songwriter. But you’ll never get better if you write less.
If you want to “get over yourself,” read this advice on overcoming your inner critic and loving songwriting.
#3 — There Is No Scarcity Of Ideas
You’ll never have to experience writer’s block or feel like you’re running out of ideas when you have an idea generation system.
If you don’t have a system for generating song ideas, start with this:
